1835Canal House is built around the same time as the Delaware & Raritan (D&R) Canal to provide a home for bridgetenders and their families.

1932D&R Canal operations closed. The house continues to be occupied for nearly forty years by Sandor Fekete, the last bridgetender at Blackwells Mills.

1970Sandor Fekete dies at the age of ninety-two.

1971
The Blackwells Mills Canal House Association is founded by a group of interested citizens to restore and preserve this important landmark.

1973
The canal and its remaining structures are entered on the National Register of Historic Places. The following year, the Delaware and Raritan Canal was designated a state park.

TodayThe house and garden have survived over a century of cultural, technological and environmental impacts. A repository of Canal history, it welcomes the public for tours, art shows, lectures, performances and holiday celebrations.
